The "Employee Free Choice Act" and why we need it so bad
The Economic Policy Institute (EPI) recently released a new study report (May 2009) that convincingly argues for the need of the "Employee Free Choice Act" (EFCA) to be enacted, ....now! The findings in this report "NO HOLES BARRED" by Kate Bronfenbrenner offers its conclusion by giving you the most comprehensive real data that could be gathered in support of the argument for labor law reform.
The study was conducted over a three year period and involved a great deal of collaberation, resource sharing, and just plain hard work from multiple state and national agencies and organizations, including the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).
While reading the report I was reminded of the many violations of the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) that many employers resort to when their workers try to form, or join a union for representation. As a construction union organizer I had heard it all before. But what really makes this latest study so much more important this time around is its timing. With the merits of some of the past similar reports being hammered by highly financed business lobbyist as being outdated and not a true picture of today's business practices, this report will hopefully give some of the legislators that are sitting on the fence some solid, reliable numbers in helping them decipher thru some of the fierce lobbying from both sides of the table on the issue.
I urge every labor organizer, regardless of sector, to read this report & to get a copy of it in front of your respective legislators, from the city council level up. If we start educating legislators when they start at the bottom rung then maybe, just maybe,................ one day.
